The Douglas Shire, nestled between the crystal blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the rich green of World Heritage rainforest is the ideal launch pad for exploring reef, rainforest and beyond! Beginning approximately 26km north of Cairns at the start of the spectacular McAlister range, the Douglas Shire boasts a laid-back lifestyle with the lure of activities and events of a vibrant tourist area.
Top picks for your weekend adventures include the Daintree National Park and stunning Mossman Gorge. Cairns is an easy drive for a weekend getaway, visit Cooktown for a short break or if you have a 4WD you can head north and explore Cape Tribulation.
Mossman and Port Douglas are becoming increasingly popular with people looking for a lifestyle change; the smaller towns, laid-back lifestyle and absence of gridlocked freeways just some of the reasons for a move to this area. Port Douglas is a favourite with tourists so offers all the mod cons you'd expect, a wide selection of world class dining and funky street cafes and excellent local markets. Due to its popularity, housing is a little more expensive here with the median property price sitting at around $685,000 for a house or $260,000 for a unit, rentals average $550p/wk for a house or $330p/wk for a unit.
The township of Mossman just 15 minutes up the road is predominately farming land but has all the facilities and services you'd expect in a rural area. Housing is very affordable with the median property price sitting at around $280,000 and the average weekly rental $360p/wk.
REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
All Queensland State Schools are allocated a transfer rating which is determined by the remoteness or distance of the location from a major city and services. While the base salary range for teachers is the same across the state; rural, remote and even regional locations provide additional financial benefits and incentives that are above and beyond the base salary.
Schools in the Mossman/ Port Douglas (and beyond) area are transfer rating 3 and 4 locations and attract locality allowance on top of your base salary. CLICK HERE for a summary of the incentives and benefits available to teachers in this location.
