Living on Thursday Island
The Torres Strait Islands is an island archipelago offshore from the highest of the Australian mainland and is home to the people of the Torres Strait Nation. This unique and beautiful region is best known for its pristine waters and amazing fishing.
Located 35km north-west of Pajinka, the northernmost point of the Australian mainland is Thursday Island or TI as it is colloquially known. The traditional name for Thursday Island is Waiben meaning ‘place of no water', owing to the scarcity of fresh water on the island. It is situated in the Prince of Wales island group and is home to just over 2600 residents. The traditional language spoken here is Kalkalgal Ya, with many local people also speaking Torres Strait Creole.
Local amenities on Thursday Island include shops, sporting facilities, a library and health centre. Travel to Thursday Island is by air to Horn Island, then ferry from Horn to Thursday Island. Commercial flights are available into Horn Island departing both Cairns and Brisbane. TI Ferry provides transfers between Horn Island and Thursday Island every hour. Additionally, there is a regular barge service to the island for freight.
