LOCATION PROFILE
Sporting and community facilities are available in all communities and may include indoor and outdoor sports fields, libraries, Indigenous Knowledge Centres and community use halls. Fishing, camping and 4WD'ing are popular recreational activities for locals and visitors alike.
The local IBIS store is your one stop shop for necessities including food and general goods. It is important to note that not all dietary requirements will be catered for locally. You may wish to access the barge service operated by SeaSwift or freight services (road or air) to bring in items you require.
Primary health care is available in all Cape communities through the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. Services include telehealth, outreach teams including visiting specialist services. The hospitals in Bamaga, Cooktown, Weipa and on Thursday Island provide general medicine, maternity, paediatrics, emergency, operating suite, pharmacy, radiology, social work, speech pathology and podiatry services. For all other Cape communities, the health clinic is capable of providing Level 2 emergency care and is staffed by a registered nurse 24hrs a day. The nearest major hospital is Cairns Base, with the Royal Flying Doctors Service providing emergency patient transfer.
Regional airlines service the Cape York area with flights operated out of Cairns daily into most communities. Skytrans covers the majority of the area, with Hinterland Aviation looking after Cooktown and Coen, and Regional Express (REX) picking up Bamaga.
REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
All Queensland State Schools are allocated a transfer rating which is determined by the remoteness or distance of the location from a major city and services. While the base salary range for teachers is the same across the state; rural, remote and even regional locations provide additional financial benefits and incentives that are above and beyond the base salary.
