Primary health care is available on all islands through the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. Services include telehealth, outreach teams including visiting specialist services. The nearest hospital, located on Thursday Island provides general medicine, maternity, paediatrics, emergency, operating suite, pharmacy, radiology, social work, speech pathology and podiatry services.
An IBIS store located on each island is your one stop shop for necessities including food and general goods. It is important to note that not all dietary requirements will be catered for locally. You may wish to access the barge service operated by SeaSwift to bring in items you require.
Sporting and community facilities are available on all islands and may include indoor and outdoor sports fields, libraries, Indigenous Knowledge Centres and community use halls. Fishing is a popular recreational activity.
All travel across the Torres Strait is from Horn Island; from here access to Thursday Island is by ferry, while the outer islands can be reached by light aircraft, or in the case of Dauan and Stephen Islands – Helicopter! Both Skytrans and Qantas provide regular flights between Brisbane or Cairns and Horn Island.
