Job Description

The Brisbane Youth Detention Centre is looking for a permanent AO4 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program Facilitator to provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, including the development of programs and services that meet individual client needs and facilitate communication between Youth Detention Centres and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an Identified Position. For this position, it is a genuine occupational requirement that it be filled by an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person as permitted and arguable under Sections 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. One of the referees should be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to the applicant’s background, knowledge, skills and experience as they relate to the cultural capabilities.

Key duties of the role that you will need to demonstrate in your application is your ability to:

  • Consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in relation to the development and maintenance of services, activities and programs for young people subject to youth justice orders, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths in detention, that facilitates their rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
  • Facilitate communication between departmental service delivery and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to ensure programs and services provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people are culturally appropriate.
  • Deliver, develop and assist in the provision of programs, activities and services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in detention.
  • Participate productively and collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in delivering programs and services to clients.
  • Assist young people with pre-release programs and provide links with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and relevant community organisations to facilitate continuity of educational, vocational and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs.
  • Assist with the security and safety of the Centre by observance of operational procedures and standards as they impact on program delivery and the provision of other activities organised for young people.
  • Provide high quality written reports, briefs and correspondence as required, using manual and computerised systems.
