About Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy:
The Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy is a partnership between the Department of Education and Training and Good to Great Schools. Our vision is to deliver “best of both worlds” educational opportunities to our students, supporting their bicultural identity while preparing them for future success. CYAAA encompasses two campuses, Coen and Hopevale, with both campuses implementing the Direct Instruction and Explicit Direct Instruction models. Here at CYAAA we believe in high expectations and no excuses; where a child's prospects are not determined by their ethnicity, location or socio-economic status.
Located on the northern end of the Great Dividing Range and surrounded by mountains, the small remote inland community of Coen is a well-known destination for tourists on their way up the Cape, and is very popular for 4WD adventures. Aboriginal people have occupied and continued to practice their own cultural traditions on and maintained the land in Cape York Peninsula for many thousands of years. The Indigenous people of the region comprise several language groups living in discrete areas including the Kaanju (southern and northern), Umpilla, Lama Lama, Wik Munkan and Ayaputhu.
Coen is situated within a number of important ‘story' or creation sites, threaded throughout the local landscape's rivers, rocks and hills. Local elders maintain custodial obligations and responsibilities of these places.
Approximately 11 hours drive from Cairns, Coen is accessible by road most of the year depending on weather, road conditions and the capability of your vehicle. Skytrans operates a regular passenger service weekdays from Cairns as well as offering air freight services. Local amenities include two shops with fuel outlets, a café and takeaway, medical centre, hotel, guesthouse and camping facilities.
Our small Coen campus caters for approximately 50 students from Prep to Year 6 and our teaching team are supported by a teaching Principal, Indigenous Cultural Tutors and teaching assistants. Our school offers an extended day program and students have the opportunity to take part in enriching extracurricular activities including sports, the arts and music to further develop their individual abilities.
