Position Information
The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. About the Role
School Learning Support Officers (Student Health Support) provide support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. The main focus of the School Learning Support Officers (Student Health Support) is the performance of health support as required so that students can participate in and access educational programs.

Essential Requirements

  • Working with Children Check Clearance
  • Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education to undertake first aid, administration of medications and health care procedures training.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
  • Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
  • Effective communication skills.

Les Powell School is located in Mt Pritchard within the South Western Metropolitan area of Sydney and caters educationally for students with a diverse range of complex learning and support needs. Students attending Les Powell School present with moderate to severe intellectual disability, and may have additional needs such as Autism, sensory impairment, challenging behaviour, mental health, physical and language disability.

The school is divided into twelve specialist support classes that range from Kindergarten to Year 12. Each class is staffed with a teacher and a school learning support officer. Students are referred to Les Powell School through a Regional Placement Panel.

Facilities provided for students include three playground areas, a heated hydrotherapy pool, library, bike and walking track, a living skills facility and a liberty swing. All classrooms have interactive white board technology and access to specialist toilets.

The family occupation and education index (FOEI) is 166. Of the total student enrollment,64% have a language background other than English, with 4% identifying as Aboriginal. The 2 most common language backgrounds are Vietnamese, inclusive of 16 students and Arabic represented by 12 students.
