Karratha Primary School (PS) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 3, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year, up to the end of Term 3, 2022.

To be suitable for this role you will ideally have good communication and collaborative skills as you will work closely with staff, students, parents/carers, therapists and the wider community to create a positive and supportive learning environment. The suitable applicants will ideally demonstrate their ability to support students with a range of disabilities to achieve educational, social and emotional outcomes.

Under teacher direction you will also assist in the implementation of specialised education programs such as occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy programs and provide feedback on these programs. You will also assist the teacher with the general care and well-being of the students and support the teacher with supervision of the students during playground duty, class activities and excursions.

Karratha PS is an Independent Public School proud of its tradition of meeting the educational needs of Karratha students for over four decades. It was the first school to be built in Karratha, providing the newly established town with primary education facilities for the increasing number of families moving into the area. The school was built in partnership with Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd and the Education Department in 1970; with the first students enrolling in 1971. The school moved into newly built premises in 2011.

Karratha PS is an inclusive school with specialist Education Support facilities providing educational services for all our students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. Our comprehensive learning programs are developed to ensure all students have an ongoing opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve their academic potential.

Our Positive Behaviour Support approach and the Kidsmatter framework enable us to consider the needs of our students in the priority areas of behaviour, and health and wellbeing. We have specialist teachers for Physical Education, The Arts and Learning Support. Student Services include a School Nurse, School Psychologist, Chaplain, Dental Therapy Unit and School Canteen. Additional agency support is accessed for students with additional needs. The Principal, two Deputy Principals and a Registrar administer a school team of approximately 50 staff. The School Board and P&C Committee are actively involved in the school.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Employees will be required to:

  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.


Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
